Virangana Maharani Laxmi Bai Government Girls Degree College was established under the Government Order no. 1978/15-17/96/seventy/96/Lko, dated 19/06/1996 on the land of legendary Rani of Jhansi due to the increased demand for higher education institutes in Uttar Pradesh. Educating a woman is educating a family as it caters to the overall personality development of girl students by infusing the spirit of its logo – ‘ Yatra naryastu pujyante ramante tatra devta’. The college is acclaimed as an ‘ideal college’ in Uttar Pradesh as it imparts quality/value education, maintains discipline, serene atmosphere, cultural and co- curricular activities. Systematic and fair examinations, excellent examination result, interactive and guardian friendly atmosphere are the factors responsible for its popularity. The Anti Ragging Cell implements the UGC guidelines and strict disciplinary action is taken to keep the campus ‘ragging free’. The Grievance Redressal Cell of the college takes actions against any complaints made by students to keep the campus free from problems. The Proctorial Board puts a strict check on every activity to maintain a peaceful and academic atmosphere in college.
From time to time the Vocational Guidance Cell directs students of various courses and job opportunities after completing graduation and post graduation. Efforts are made by the principal, staff and office employees to maintain amicable atmosphere for the growth of the students.
Facilities are provided for the welfare, education and up-gradation of girl students. The college has a well furnished multipurpose hall for cultural and other activities, classrooms, reading room, common room, NSS room, Rover Ranger room, sports room, yoga hall, Psychology and Home Science lab, Music room with audio-Visual system DVD/CD player, large screen LCD projector for the girl students. Yoga practice enhances physical and mental strength. Its dynamic impact improves the concentrative power of the students. Interactive learning is insured through classroom teaching and through Resource Persons, who timely guide the students. To keep pace with the recent developments in every field, teachers while teaching incorporate the latest information pertaining to their subjects. The college follows the reservation policy of the state government for admitting students.. Scholarship is provided to every category of student, General, SC, ST, and OBC which helps in educating the economically weaker section of the society.
To nurture the spirit of social service in the girl student, the NSS unit of the college organises one day camps and special camps to provide a platform to spread awareness in the society. Awareness rallies are taken out; street plays are performed on social issues like female foeticide, dowry system, illiteracy, menace of HIV/AIDS, environmental pollution, women empowerment, drug abuse etc. In blood donation camps the students donate blood and spread the message of self sacrifice. NSS volunteers were selected for the pre-Republic day Parade and the final march at Rajpath on 26th January 2012. The volunteers learn all attributes of good citizenship and acquire a service oriented approach towards life.
The Rover Rangers unit of the college was registered on 28th July 1999. It is an autonomous body which inculcates the spirit of dedication and social service in students. The camp activities include tent pitching, rope bridge practice, training to survive with minimum provisions and cultural activities to spread awareness against superstitions, untouchability, child marriage, environmental degradation, and other social issues. To add a feather to the cap of the college three volunteers from the college have received President Medal from Smt Pratibha Devi Patil (Ex-President Of India).
The Green Club of the college is active throughout the year in keeping the campus green and beautiful. Environment Day and Independence Day is celebrated by planting of saplings. The entire teaching, non-teaching staff and students are its members.
The college is situated in the land of the great Magician of Hockey, Major Dhyanchand. To orient students towards sports, the Physical Education Department organizes various sports activities regularly. As a result students havewon Inter-University tournaments, district matches and represented team at State and National level. The credit goes to the guidance of the coach and perseverance of the college administration, teaching, non-teaching staff and the students.
At every session all the departments organize various competitions like debates, quiz, essay writing, slogan making, skit, mime etc. Fair judgement and encouragement of the students help in developing confidence in them. Extra Classes and tutorials are taken to improve the performance of the students in examination.
Parent- teacher & student teacher interaction gives feedback of the overall functioning and problems of the college and take measures to rectify it. Many of the alumni are today PCS officer, lecturers, instructors, teachers, fashion designers, small scale business women etc. Thus they have made the college proud and have paid tribute to the legendary Rani of Jhansi by contributing in nation building.
